I will admit, this was a hard one to nail down. Anyone who knows me, knows that I like simple. Mastering this recipe was anything BUT simple. I would wash and then re-wash dishes only for them to come out of the dishwasher with residue, until I found the secret ingredient! Citric acid is an absolute must. Trust me folks, you do not want to skip this ingredient.
I am so happy that I stuck with it to find the exact recipe that works, and absolutely tickled with how wonderfully clean my dishes are now. It was partly because I am not a fan of paying out the wazoo for store bought dish detergent, but also because I am not much of a quitter. I knew that if I kept toying with this DIY dish detergent recipe, I would eventually end up with perfection, and I am proud to say that I did. Of course in all of my joy, I had to share it with you (several months later, I admit).
What You Will Need:
- Large glass container (like this)
- 2 cups washing soda
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup Citric acid (I get mine here)
- 1 cup Sea salt
Note: I do not use Borax, nor do I recommend Borax because it is known to cause eye, skin, and respiratory irritation as well as hormone disruption.
- In your large glass container add all ingredients
- Mix ingredients all ingredients well by shaking or stirring
- Enjoy your beautiful sparkling dishes fresh out of the dishwasher
If you are feeling super crafty, you can make your DIY dishwasher detergent into tiny tablet with an ice cube tray, but like I said, I like simple.
